Romanian archbishop charged with bribe taking

Prosecutors have formally charged a Romanian archbishop with taking a bribe and making false statements.
Prosecutors at the High Court of Justice accuse Teodosie, the archbishop of Tomis, with taking a kickback to smooth the way for a theology student to become an Orthodox priest.
He is also charged with making false statements in the case to promote the student.
Two other Orthodox priests were also charged Wednesday in the same case. Teodosie is the first senior cleric to be charged since communism ended in 1989.
Teodosie said bribes should be considered donations to the church when the allegations first appeared in May. More than 85 percent of Romanians are Orthodox believers.
