Russian gas begins direct flow to South Ossetia

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has presided over the launch of the first pipeline to carry natural gas directly to the breakaway Georgian republic of South Ossetia, bypassing Georgia proper.
During a meeting between Putin and South Ossetian leader Eduard Kokoity in Moscow, the chief executive of Gazprom called his deputy in the South Ossetian capital and instructed him to open the valve.
Putin and Kokoity met Wednesday on the first anniversary of Russia's recognition of the independence of South Ossetia and a second breakaway republic, Abkhazia, following a brief war between Russia and Georgia.
Putin characterized the decision to recognize South Ossetia's independence as "a firm guarantee of peace in the region and of the survival of two nations."
