Tourism Bureau offers subsidies to promote tourism in Taitung

Taipei, Aug 26 (CNA) In an effort to accelerate the recovery of the tourism sector in eastern Taiwan's typhoon-devastated Taitung, the East Coast National Scenic Area Administration has decided to offer tourist subsidies on cycling tours in the area, the Tourism Bureau said Wednesday.
"The flood disaster after Typhoon Morakot did not cause too much damage in Taitung's scenic areas, " said Yang Wen-ta, president of the Taitung Tourism Association.
Even though the six-floor Jinshuai Hotel toppled into a river and stores nearby were washed away by a landslide in Jhihben township, other hot spring hotels in the worst-hit areas of Taitung have already resumed normal operations, he noted.
Despite this, Taitung's hotel industry has suffered from low occupancy since the flooding, with few tourists coming to the city, he said.
To promote tourism in the area, the bureau, in cooperation with two local travel agencies, has been promoting cycling and ecotourism packages, including bicycle holidays on outlying Green Island, as well as offering subsidies of NT$500 (US$15) per tourist until Nov.
30.
In addition, the East Coast National Scenic Area Administration is to host a National Day cycling event in cooperation with one of Taiwan's leading bicycle manufacturers.
Participants in the event will tie yellow ribbons to their bikes, pedal down the east coast of Taiwan and pray for the people of Taitung.
