Nats sign Livan Hernandez

The Washington Nationals have signed veteran right-hand pitcher Livan Hernandez of Cuba and he will start Wednesday's game against the Chicago Cubs.
The 34-year-old was released by the Mets on Thursday and signed by Washington on Tuesday. He was 7 wins and 8 losses with a 5.47 ERA for the New York Mets and had struggled in his last three starts, allowing 18 earned runs in 14 1-3 innings.
Hernandez pitched for the Nationals in 2005 and 2006, going 15-10 in his first season with the club.
Reliever Collin Balester, who was 1-4 with a 6.82 ERA in seven appearances, was sent to minor league Triple-A Syracuse.
