Liga de Quito, Vitora and Union Espanola advance

Edison Mendez scored a second half equalizer to give Ecuadorian club Liga de Quito a 1-1 draw with Libertad of Paraguay and a berth in the next round of the Copa Sudamericana on Tuesday.
Liga de Quito advanced with a 2-1 goal aggregate after beating Libertad 1-0 in their first-leg match at Quito.
In the day's other preliminary round matches, Vitoria of Brazil beat compatriot Coritiba 5-3 on penalties, while Chilean side Union Espanola advanced with a 1-0 home win over La Equidad of Colombia.
Liga, Vitoria and Union join Universidad de Chile, Cienciano of Peru and Cerro Porteno of Paraguay in the last 16. Current champion Internacional of Brazil also enters at the last 16 stage.
Mendez leveled the score for Liga against Libertad in the 64th minute with a left-footed shot into the net from the edge of the box. Javier Gonzalez had opened the scoring in the 33rd.
In Chile, Mario Aravena's 18th minute strike gave Union a 1-0 win and a 3-2 goal aggregate victory over La Equidad.
Peruvian referee Georges Buckley had to be replaced for the match and after police reopened an investigation into a charge he had smoked marijuana in 1996 when living in Santiago as a student.
Goals from Marcelinho in the 47th minute and Renatinho in the 57th forced the Vitoria-Coritiba match into penalties after Coritiba won their first-leg match 2-0.
The Copa Sudamericana is South America's No. 2 club tournament and features 31 clubs from 10 nations.
The Copa Sudamericana preliminary round continues through August and September, with further knockout rounds leading to the crowning of the champion in December.
