Peruvian referee banned over old drugs charge

Peruvian referee Georges Buckley was prevented from officiating at a Copa Sudamericana match in Chile on Wednesday after a judge in Santiago placed him under investigation because of a 13-year-old drug charge.
Buckley, who was due to officiate at the match between Union Espanola of Chile and Colombia's La Equidad, was caught smoking marijuana in 1996 when living in the Chilean capital Santiago as an economics student.
The incident resulted in a legal procedure that remained unresolved despite the time gap.
After arriving in Chile to referee the match, police informed Buckley that judge Pablo Contreras had signed the restriction order to prevent him leaving the country until his legal situation is clarified.
Buckley was replaced by compatriot Victor Hugo Carrillo as referee for the match.
