Australia gives final approval to Chinese gas sale

The Australian government has given final approval for a $41 billion deal to sell Australian natural gas to China.
Environment Minister Peter Garrett said Wednesday that petroleum country Chevron has agreed to meet the 28 environmental conditions he had set for the development of the Gorgon gas field off northwest Australia.
PetroChina Co., Asia's largest oil and gas company, last week agreed to buy 2.25 million tons per year of liquefied natural gas from the yet-to-be developed gas field.
The contract gives a huge boost to the Gorgon project, which is being developed by Australian units of global energy companies Chevron, ExxonMobil Corp. and Royal Dutch Shell PLC.
The environmental approval was the final hurdle for the gas field development.
