Study: Brazil blacks slain double rate for whites

A study says twice as many black people are slain in Brazil as whites even though both groups are roughly equal in population.
The study by Rio de Janeiro's federal university says nearly 60,000 blacks died from homicides in Latin America's biggest country in 2006 and 2007, while the toll for whites was 30,000.
Study coordinator Marcelo Paixao told the government news service, Agencia Brasil, on Tuesday that "social reasons" such as poverty and a higher percentage living in violent slums put blacks more at risk.
The study was based on data from the public health system in Brazil, which is home to 190 million people.
