San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom discussed green technology, environmentally friendly programs and global warming with his local counterpart during a visit to Mexico City on Tuesday.
Mayor Marcelo Ebrard said they talked about his plan to increase bicycle lanes and bike sharing programs in the Mexican capital.
Newsom also visited a climate center where experts monitor how the weather is changing in Mexico and why, Ebrard's office said in a statement.
Ebrard called Mexico City and San Francisco two "liberal cities on the cutting edge (that) are committed to similar causes."
Newsom also met with Mexican President Felipe Calderon to discuss illegal migration and Mexico's handling of the swine flu outbreak last spring, according to a statement from the presidency.
