Greece defeats Russia in Acropolis tournament

Greece beat winless Russia 71-63 to become the sole undefeated team after two matches at the Acropolis Tournament on Tuesday.
Also, Serbia prevailed 78-70 over Lithuania.
Greece broke open a tight match in the third quarter, when its stifling defense limited Russia to just five points. Greece scored only 13 in the same period, but it was enough for a 54-44 lead that was never seriously threatened in the final quarter.
Greece led Russia also in steals, 14-7, and rebounds, 33-23.
Center Kosta Koufos and guard Nick Kalathes led Greece's dozen scorers with 10 points each.
Despite a 46-29 advantage in rebounds over Serbia, Lithuania was undone by making only two of 26 3-point shots. Lithuania also conceded 23 turnovers to Serbia's 13.
Lithuania managed to move ahead 52-51 and 54-53 just before the end of the third quarter but the turnovers and missed 3-pointers allowed Serbia to quickly re-establish a lead it didn't concede again.
Novica Velickovic scored 14 to lead Serbia, while forward Linas Kleiza led Lithuania with 19.
The tournament is a tuneup for the European Championship in Poland from Sept. 7-20. Greece, Lithuania and Russia are the top seeds in their respective groups, while former powerhouse Serbia is looking to make a comeback after a string of disappointing performances in the past three years.
On Wednesday, the final day of the tournament, it is: Russia vs. Serbia and Greece vs. Lithuania.
