Atletico in Champions group stage after 2-0 win

Atletico Madrid ensured a place in the group phase of the Champions League by beating Panathinaikos 2-0 on Tuesday and 5-2 on aggregate.
The Spanish host controlled the return game in Vicente Calderon Stadium thanks to a third-minute own goal by Loukas Vyntra and a late strike by Sergio Aguero.
Already behind from the first leg in Athens, Panathinaikos looked well beaten before striker Djibril Cisse was sent off in the 70th minute.
The Greek club made five changes from the side beaten at home last week including three in defense. But it made no difference as Atletico went ahead in the third minute with even more calamities in the Panathinaikos defense.
The defenders failed to deal with a right cross from Johnny Heitinga and the ball dropped to the unmarked Diego Forlan. His sideways pass struck Vyntra and deflected into his own net.
Although Atletico dominated the game in the half empty stadium, Vyntra should have equalized in first-half stoppage time when he met a free kick totally unmarked but headed over the top from five meters.
Panathinaikos' slim hopes virtually ended 20 minutes from the end when striker Cisse was sent off for a clumsy studs-up foul.
And the result was certain in the 82nd when Aguero ran past two defenders and fired a low left-foot shot under goalkeeper Mario Galinovic.
