Official: Explosion hits southern Afghan city

A large blast rocked Afghanistan's largest southern city after nightfall Tuesday, sending flames into the sky, officials said. Casualties were likely but officials could not immediately say how many there were.
It appeared the explosion happened near Kandahar's intelligence service or provincial council, said provincial council chief Ahmad Wali Karzai, the brother of President Hamid Karzai.
The head of Kandahar's criminal investigations department, Pashtun Mohmand, said he believed an unknown number of people had been killed or wounded in the attack, which he said may have targeted a building that houses foreigners.
An Associated Press reporter in Kandahar said a huge explosion rocked the city, followed by gunfire on the street afterward.
Taliban militants have carried out several complex attacks in Kandahar the last several year. Kandahar is the spiritual home of the Taliban. A large NATO base sits on Kandahar's outskirts, but militants control districts immediately to the city's west.
