Premier to work at reconstruction office in southern Taiwan

Taipei, Aug. 25 (CNA) Premier Liu Chao-shiuan will work at a post-Typhoon Morakot reconstruction office in southern Taiwan for one week from Wednesday to coordinate relief and rehabilitation efforts, Government Information Office Minister Su Jun-pin said Tuesday.
Liu will help chiefs and deputy chiefs of government agencies in charge of post-disaster reconstruction work at the office to facilitate the distribution of relief subsidies, resettlement and reconstruction work, according to Su.
The initiative is aimed at providing a platform for Cabinet chiefs and officials to exchange views with residents of areas in southern Taiwan affected by the typhoon on reconstruction-related issues, he added.
The government also hopes to strengthen communication and coordination with displaced victims of the typhoon in terms of resettlement operations, he went on.
The premier will ask relevant agencies to map out plans pertaining to future typhoons and torrential rain in Morakot-affected areas during this year's typhoon season.
He will also preside over an Aug. 27 Cabinet meeting in Taipei as scheduled and will attend other important meetings in Taipei, such as those in relation to A(H1N1) influenza, according to Su.
"In principle, Liu will stay in southern Taiwan but will return to Taipei for important meetings," Su added.
In a related development, Control Yuan President Wang Chien-hsuan said the country's highest watchdog body will release a report in six months on its investigation into who should be held responsible for the administration's flawed response to the typhoon, which killed an estimated 500 people and left hundreds more homeless.
