Bomb attack wounds 18 in southern Thailand

An army official says suspected Muslim insurgents in Thailand's insurgency-plagued south have detonated a car bomb outside a crowded open-air restaurant, wounding 18 people.
Army spokesman Col. Parinya Chaidilok says the bomb exploded Tuesday in the downtown area of the city of Narathiwat at lunchtime.
He said a 50-kilogram explosive was hidden in a pickup truck outside the restaurant and triggered by a mobile phone.
More than 3,700 people have been killed in Thailand's three southernmost provinces since an Islamic insurgency flared in January 2004.
The provinces are the only Muslim-majority areas in the Buddhist-dominated country.
