Greece edges out Serbia 66-65 in tournament opener

Greece eked out a 66-65 win over Serbia on the opening day of the 23rd Acropolis basketball tournament Monday thanks to a putback by center Yiannis Bourousis 22.4 seconds before the end.
In the other game of the friendly tournament, Lithuania defeated Russia 78-61.
In a low-scoring game marked by poor shooting _ 41 percent for Greece, 39 percent for Serbia _ the Greeks maintained the lead for most of the game and led 34-27 at halftime. Serbia drew level at 47-47 at the end of the third period, and the teams were neck-and-neck in the fourth, with Greece managing to avoid a defeat thanks to tenacious defense, mainly by center Sofoklis Schortsianitis.
Guards Vassilis Spanoulis and Nikos Zisis led Greece with 15 points each, while guard Ivan Paunic scored 11 for Serbia. Bourousis had a game-high 12 rebounds.
"We wanted to win, sometimes too much...we played good defense, but our offense was not so good," said Greece's Lithuanian coach Jonas Kazlauskas.
He added that Greece did not play its usual pick-and-roll offense because of bad decisions by players, notably by national team rookie guard Nick Kalathes, a former University of Florida standout.
Earlier, Lithuania took the lead for good midway through the first quarter and went on to defeat Russia thanks to its sharp shooting _ 52 percent to Russia's 34 percent. Power forward Ksystof Lavrinovic scored 15 points to lead Lithuania while Kelly McCarty, a naturalized Russian and former University of Southern Mississippi player, was top scorer for Russia with 13.
The tournament serves as a tune-up for the European Championships which will be held in Poland September 7-20. Greece, Lithuania and Russia are the top seeds in their respective groups, while former powerhouse Serbia is looking to make a comeback after a string of disappointing performances which saw it finish 11th in the 2006 World Championships, 14th in the 2007 European Championships and failing to qualify for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Tuesday, it is: Lithuania vs. Serbia and Greece vs. Russia. The tournament ends Wednesday.
