Taipei travel guide to hit bookstands

An English-language edition of "Insight City Guide: Taipei" will go on sale worldwide, marking the first time the city has been included in a travel guide series by an international publishing firm.
The book is published by APA Publications in cooperation with the Taipei city government.

During a news conference on the book's release Friday, Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) said the publication of the book is a very important milestone signifying that Taipei City is officially on the map of international tourism and that he hopes the book will help attract more foreign tourists to the country.
Ma pointed out that while travel guides are sold in airports and major bookstores around the world, none have featured Taipei because Taiwan is not considered a major travel destination.

Taiwan sees only 3.4 million tourist arrivals per year, which is barely 15 percent of the total population of the country, according to Ma. This puts Taipei far behind travel hotspots such as Hong Kong, which has a population of 6.8 million but sees 15 million tourist arrivals per year.
