Nepalese angry over hit-and-run riot in capital

About 2,000 protesters angry over the deaths of six people in a hit-and-run accident shut down central Katmandu on Wednesday and clashed with police.
A police statement said a car driving the wrong way down a one-way street mowed down six people _ all migrant workers from neighboring India _ as they walked on the sidewalk just after midnight Tuesday. The victims were taken to a nearby hospital, but all died.
Traffic violators often get off by bribing authorities in Nepal, and the protesters accused the police of not pursuing the culprit aggressively enough. They marched into the center of the capital Wednesday and ordered shopkeepers out of their stores, burning tires in the streets to block downtown traffic.
Police, who said they were doing all they could to find the driver, used bamboo batons to push back the angry crowd and detained 10 protesters. Demonstrators responded by throwing stones at the police.
