Chile indicts 2 generals in 1990s arms deal

A Chilean judge has indicted two retired generals on accusations they syphoned money from military arms purchases in the late 1990s.
Gens. Luis Iracabal Lobos and Gustavo Latorre Vasquez have been jailed pending trial. Nearly $600,000 went missing during the 1998 purchase of 200 tanks from the Netherlands when Chile was under the military dictatorship of Gen. Augusto Pinochet.
Judge Manuel Antonio Rebolledo ruled on Monday that there was sufficient evidence to proceed with the trial. The violations were discovered during an investigation into Pinochet's secret bank accounts.
At the time of his death in December 2006, Pinochet's overseas accounts totaling $28 million were frozen as part of his indictment on tax evasion charges.
