New low pressure system may strengthen into typhoon: CWB

Taipei, Aug. 2 (CNA) The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Sunday that it was watching a tropical depression system near Luzon Province in the Philippines that might develop into a tropical storm or typhoon.
The depression was moving in a west-northwesterly direction toward Taiwan at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour as of 8 a.m.
Sunday, the CWB reported.
The system later slowed a bit, CWB meteorologists said, adding that it remained to be seen whether the system will alter in structure after passing across Luzon Island.
Meanwhile, hot weather in Taiwan persisted, with temperatures expected to reach 35-36 degrees Celsius in northern Taiwan and 33-34 degrees for the rest of the island for that day.
Sporadic afternoon showers were forecast for the eastern part of Taiwan under the influence of the outer bands of the depression system, the weather bureau said.
