Northrop wins Taiwan plane upgrades

Northrop Grumman Corp. received a U.S. Navy contract to upgrade six Taiwan Air Force surveillance airplanes under the foreign military sales program.
Northrop will add a new set of sensors to Taiwan's E-2C aircraft under the award announced yesterday on the Pentagon's website.
Northrop has supplied six surveillance planes to Taiwan, two of which are Hawkeye 2000 models, company spokeswoman Kirsti Dunn said in a phone interview. Northrop will equip all six planes with the latest electronic sensors, she said. The Hawkeye 2000 is the most automated airborne surveillance plane and is used by the U.S. Navy, according to Northrop's website.
The contract will be completed by June 2013, the Pentagon said. The Defense Department announced the sale of US$6.46 billion in weapons to Taiwan in October, including the Hawkeye airplanes, Patriot anti-missile systems and Apache helicopters.
