Greek police nab alleged people-smuggling kingpin

Police in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki announced Saturday that they have arrested the head of "the largest immigrant-smuggling operation in the Balkans," a 51-year-old Greek taxi driver.
"We have cooperated with authorities in Belgrade and Skopje since September 2008 to track down a vast immigrant-smuggling operation," Tryfon Koukios, head of the Thessaloniki police's illegal aliens division, told reporters. Belgrade is the capital of Serbia; Skopje is the capital of Macedonia.
The smuggling ring worked mostly with Chinese migrants who flew from Beijing to Belgrade via Moscow and were then taken overland to Greece, police said. The group also helped people from Albania and Kosovo enter Greece illegally, according to police.
In November 2008, Macedonian authorities arrested 18 people they said were involved in the smuggling ring.
The 51-year-old _ whose name has not been provided by authorities _ and a 56-year-old alleged accomplice, also a taxi driver, were arrested early Saturday outside Thessaloniki, along with eight Chinese immigrants.
