Ben Curtis, who won the British Open on his first try in 2003, has posted a 5-under 65 to tie Tom Watson for the first-round lead.
Curtis overcame a couple of bogeys at Turnberry with an eagle at the par-5 seventh and birdies on four of his last six holes Thursday. He finished up with a two-putt par at No. 18, walking off tied with the 59-year-old Watson.
The conditions are making it easy to attack, and the players are taking advantage. Soren Hansen of Denmark is also at 5 under with four holes still to play, giving him a shot at the outright lead.
Twenty-five players are already in the clubhouse with below-par scores, though Tiger Woods isn't among them. The three-time Open champion struggled to a 71.
