President to launch series of weekly online addresses

Taipei, July 16 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou will deliver a 3-5 minute speech via online video every Saturday morning starting July 18, the Presidential Office announced Thursday.
Inspired by former U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Fireside Chats and considering the large population of Internet users in Taiwan, Ma decided to launch the video addresses on the Presidential Office Web site, it added.
He will speak on a different topic each week, beginning with the subject of two-way Internet communication between him and public and an update of his recent activities, according to the office.
The office said that Ma is inviting his audience to not only watch his presentation, but also to participate in the forum on the Presidential Office Web site.
Suggestions for topics on which the president should speak will be appreciated and considered, the office said.
The power of the Internet and its potential influence cannot be underestimated, and President Ma believes that the government can communicate and interact efficiently with the public via this medium, it added.
The population of Internet users in Taiwan is 15 million and the average time spent online is 16 hours per week, according to a survey conducted by Foreseeing Innovative New Digiservices in March.
