Former US House Speaker Newt Gingrich displayed a personal side as he campaigned in Iowa today. He wiped away tears at a campaign appearance as he mentioned his mother.

Gingrich was sitting on a stage at an event aimed at mothers in Des Moines, attributed his interest in brain research to his own mom, who lived in a long-term care facility with bipolar disease and other physical alignments before her death in 2003. In addition, he has been sliding in polls of the Republican race, is touring Iowa by bus as he seeks support in the state’s January 3 caucuses. A NBC News-Marist poll of 433 likely Iowa caucus-goers released today showed him in fifth place, with 13 percent support. In a NBC-Marist survey late last month, Gingrich led the field with 28 percent. Since then, he has been the target of attack ads by rivals, according to Bloomberg.

“My whole emphasis on brain science comes in directly from dealing, um,” he said, as his voice broke and tears welled in his eyes.
“See, I’m having emotion,” he continued. “From dealing with the real problems of real people in my family.”

He also referred when asked by moderator Frank Luntz at the event for a recollection of his mom, that “I identify my mother with being happy, loving life, having a sense of joy in her friends.”
