Keeping informed about the bird flu
The first flu epidemic happened in 1580. Within one hundred years, it occurred three times in 1918, 1957 and 1968. The one in 1918 in Spain was the most severe. At least 20 million people were killed. It has been 37 years since the last flu pandemic. Many experts in WHO regard the discovery of H5N1 virus as presenting a threat of a human flu epidemic.
