2009 Taipei Lantern Festival:

The 2009 Taipei Lantern Festival will open Feb. 6 and last for 10 days, featuring lanterns decorated with images of oxen to greet the Year of the Ox, which begins Jan. 26 according to the Chinese lunar calendar.

Officials at Taipei City's Department of Civil Affairs, which is organizing the event, said at a press conference Monday that an exhibition of lanterns created in the traditional manner will be held in the plaza of the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall.

In addition to the ox-themed creations, there will be an area for lanterns highlighting the Deaflympics, a major international sports event that Taipei will host in September this year.

The annual event will also include a second display of visual arts on a wall of City Hall created with multicolored beams from two giant projectors.

The city government has invited projection and lighting experts from an Austrian company, Pani, and eight domestic artists to handle the visual art creations, according to the officials.

They said that from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. between Feb. 6 and Feb. 15, a new media art presentation each night will offer Taipei residents a unique lantern festival experience with a variety of visual creations featuring different themes.
