A delegation of the European Parliament (EP) has arrived in Taiwan for a five-day visit aimed at exchanging views with Taiwan's health authorities on the country's bid to join the World Health Assembly (WHA), according to an official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The WHA is the highest decision-making body of the Geneva-based World Health Organization, which Taiwan has been seeking to join for years.

The delegation is comprised of three EP members - Horst Posdorf, a member of the EP Development Committee; Eugenijus Maldeikis, a member of the EP Industry, Research and Energy Committee; and Metin Kazak, a member of the EP Foreign Affairs Committee, the official said Monday.

Posdorf, the leader of the delegation, wrote last year in a letter to the heads of European Union's agencies in charge of health affairs to speak up for Taiwan. He is also a supporter of Taiwan's bid to join the UN.

Maldeikis is a pro-Taiwan politician who is the former Lithuanian minister of the economy.

Kazak put forth a pro-Taiwan bill as he reviewed reports on supporting Taiwan's bid to join the WHA during a recent meeting of the EP Foreign Affairs Committee.
