The Tainan county government has recently dispatched two vehicles on a countywide tour of remote areas to teach people living there how to use a computer, surf the Internet and build a personal blog.
The vans made their first stop in Baihe township Dec. 18, where they opened a services headquarters at the Chumen community center in a ceremony in which Tainan Magistrate Su Huan-chih invited residents to enjoy surfing the Internet with him.
Many grandparents showed up with their grandchildren, eager to take advantage of the free computer courses.
According to Su, one of the vehicles, dubbed a "motion service vehicle" is an old van owned by the county's department of social affairs into which a modern office equipped with computers, a broadcasting system and video and audio recording systems has been fitted.
The van, staffed with technicians and voluntary workers, was commissioned to conduct digital education in remote areas, along with the PunCar -- a van equipped with Internet technology and online communication devices.
The PunCar is operated by the non-profit Association of Digital Culture Taiwan to promote Internet applications in schools and local communities in an effort to narrow the urban-rural digital gap.
Su said the vans will continue to offer the digital teaching in more than 200 other communities around the county.
