Taiwan police charge man for ripping wig off lawmaker’s head

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Police referred a man to the Taipei Prosecutors Office Monday for pulling a wig off Kuomintang lawmaker Chiu Yi’s head.

The ruling party lawmaker, widely known for his persistent allegations of wrongdoing against ex-President Chen Shui-bian, was visiting the Control Yuan Monday morning to demand an investigation against Taipei District Court judge Chou Chan-chun for deciding to release Chen without bail on Saturday.

A man later identified by the media as Huang Yung-tien, the chairman of a pro-Chen group in Tainan, reportedly ripped the wig from Chiu’s head and tried to run away with it. Cable television footage showed police wrestling Huang to the ground before taking the wig inside the Control Yuan building.

The suspect’s wife told reporters it was an accident, and that Huang had never meant to pull off the lawmaker’s wig.

“It feels like someone pulled my trousers down in public,” Chiu told reporters later, before suing Huang for impinging on his freedom.

The suspect is reportedly a diehard supporter of the ex-president.

During massive anti-Chen protests two years ago, Huang put up posters in support of the then-President and went to shout at the protesters, earning him police interrogation on suspicion of violating the Parade and Assembly Law, media reports said.
