Former President Chen Shui-bian's office denied yesterday he carried funds on Air Force One during an official visit to the Pacific nation of Palau in September 2006.The statement followed media reports that during massive anti-government protests in Taipei, Chen used an official overseas trip to move US$7 million in cash to deposit at the Palau branch of Taiwan's First Commercial Bank.
Prosecutors denied they had received any relevant information, but said they would investigate if witnesses could provide reliable documents.
The allegations about Chen's Palau trip were first mentioned by talk show host Cisy Chen in a column in last Saturday's edition of the Chinese-language Apple Daily.
The allegations are the latest in a wave of rumors about foreign accounts held by Chen and his relatives. Chen was taken into custody on Nov. 12 on suspicion of corruption and money laundering.
