TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Seven students from the Department of Information Management of Ming Chuan University developed “spring for Intensive Care Unit (ICU)” project, designing for paramedics to grasp patients’ condition via transmission and live image functions of cell phone to elevate patients’ survival rate.

Hu Chin-wei (胡晉維) and his classmates went to the intensive care unit of Taipei’s Wan Fang Hospital in their spare time to understand its operations. Hu observed that paramedics spent much time writing patients’ forms and medical records every day. He thought that their workload would be reduced and they could spend more time taking care of patients if they used cell phone transmission system.

Therefore, the research team developed a “Spring for Intensive Care Unit” software, with three major functions of “instant diagnosis”, “instant observation”, and “emergency location system”. When the software is installed in cell phones of doctors and patients, the location of paramedics can be grasped immediately. Doctors can write diagnosis on cell phone interface, upload patients’ medical history to database, and check on patients’ latest condition. Paramedics can also see patients’ condition and past medical history via cell phone live image.

The project took the top honor of 3G Digital Life Group in 2008 Chunghwa Telecom Application Contest, winning NT$300,000 prize and secured job opportunities. Chunghwa Telecom, Wan Fang Hospital and Inventec Corporation all displayed their interest in collaboration with the project.
