TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Bergman Film Festival will kick off on Nov. 28 at Spot Taipei Film House. A series of Swedish director Ingmar Bergman's classics will be shown in the festival, including early films never screened in Taiwan. Taiwan Film and Culture Association director-general and well-known director Hou Hsiao-hsien (侯孝賢) yesterday said that Begman’s and his films all conveyed the theme of detachment but in different methods. The viewers could judge which director was more detached.Organized by the Council for Cultural Affairs of the Executive Yuan and sponsored by the TFCA, according to CCA Chairwoman Huang Pi-tuan (黃碧端), Bergman Film Festival hoped to grant the Taiwanese another opportunity to familiarize themselves with this prominent director and his hometown Sweden via the visual arts.
Hou said that the more film festivals were held in Taiwan, the more deeply he felt that theaters for art films in Taiwan were few and far between. He hoped that the government could set up more art film theaters for the masterpieces to be appreciated. Hou said that although not every Bergman’s film would be screened in the festival, the collection of 15 films in total was still a rare opportunity since the film copies had been difficult to retrieve. The fans should not miss this chance to appreciate the master’s classic works.
