Brazil's Supreme Court is hearing arguments on whether women should be able to legally abort brainless fetuses without first going before a judge.Tuesday's Supreme Court session is the first of three dedicated to the issue in Brazil, where abortion is illegal.
The National Health Care Workers Confederation has asked the court to eliminate the need to go before a judge to abort a brainless fetus. Judicial approval now can take months.
The measure is opposed by the Catholic Church.
Since 1989, Brazilian judges have allowed about 3,000 women to interrupt their pregnancies when the fetus was deemed unlikely to survive.
