Taiwan's new tennis hope Yang Tsung-hua, who and his partner Hsieh Cheng-peng won the boys' doubles at Wimbledon on Sunday, said on Tuesday upon his return to Taiwan that he will focus more on turning professional in the future. Yang and Hsieh defeated Matt Reid and Bernard Tomic of Australia, 6-4, 2-6 and 12-10, making them the first Taiwanese team ever to win a top trophy at Wimbledon.
It was the pair's second Gram Slam title so far this year. They also excelled in the Australian Open boys doubles event in January.
Yang, currently ranked No. 1 in the ITF World Junior Rankings, said although he was happy to have won the boys' doubles at Wimbledon, he felt a bit sorry for not performing well enough in the singles. Yang just reached the last 16 in the boys singles event.
The grass surface at Wimbledon, which he had had difficulties adjusting to, might have affected his footwork in the singles, he said.
Yang made the history June 9 when he won the junior boys singles title at the French Open. The 17-year-old was the first Taiwanese junior player to emerge as champion at Roland Garros.
Ascending to the world number one ranking in junior tennis will definitely be helpful to his taking part in professional tennis, Yang said, adding that he will focus on turning professional in the future. Noting that he needs better ranking on the professional tennis, Yang said he will work harder to get his professional ranking up.
