Consumer prices in Taipei City rose 3.76 percent in the first six months of 2008 compared to the same period a year earlier, the city government's Department of Budget, Accounting and Statistics said Tuesday.Department officials said the increase was the highest in 12 years. Prices of seven major categories of basic goods showed an upward trend.
Food prices registered the largest increase of 9.19 percent, followed by rises in transportation costs of 4.09 percent and in medical care of 3.95 percent, the officials said.
Prices of miscellaneous items also increased by 2.04 percent, garments and clothing increased by 1.75 percent, living expenses increased by 1.32 percent and education and entertainment expenses increased by 0.93 percent, they added.
The officials said consumer prices in June increased by 4.46 year-on-year, the sixth consecutive month in which annualized inflation exceeded 3 percent.
They said that compared with prices in May, the prices of seafood, meat, and grains and their products rose by 22.38 percent, 18.54 percent, and 12.33 percent, respectively.
Fuel prices and rent were also comparatively higher, while the prices of electronics goods continued to drop.
