Julio Cendal has contacted regional government and safety officials in Zaragoza requesting several extra measures to protect Madrid's team at the penultimate match of the season, sports daily Marca said Wednesday.

The club wants police units with bomb-sniffing dogs to be deployed in and around the stadium, including sewers. The team is also asking for its hotel to be searched and secured, for the squad's arrival at Zaragoza airport to have enhanced security and for the team bus to be given 24-hour surveillance, Marca said.

Real Madrid has been targeted by ETA on at least two occasions.

The Santiago Bernabeu Stadium had to be evacuated during a Spanish league match against Real Sociedad in December 2005 after a bomb threat. The remaining seven minutes were resumed in January 2006, when Zinedine Zidane helped Madrid to a 2-1 win.

In May 2002, Basque separatists detonated a car bomb which injured 17 people outside a crowded Bernabeu before a crucial match against rival FC Barcelona in the Champions League semifinals.

Spain's National Court jailed two ETA separatists in March 2006 for their part in causing the explosion.

ETA, which stands for Basque Homeland and Freedom, is accused of killing more than 800 people since 1968 in a violent campaign for independence from Spain.

No one was available at Madrid to comment on security measures.
