System breakdown affects 22,000 YouBikes

A technical breakdown in the YouBike system, a popular public bike rental system in Taiwan, has caused service suspension of 22,000 YouBikes in the country, while the company operating the system said it had dispatched personnel to look into the problems, which were expected to be solved before nightfall. Vicky Liu, spokesperson of the YouBike division of Giant Manufacturing Corporation Ltd., which operates the country’s YouBike system, said Wednesday that the YouBike post controller system software broke down at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, causing 17,317 bike posts in six cities and counties unusable. Taipei City’s Department of Transportation (DOT) said it received a message around 6 a.m. that said during a routine update of the national YouBike system, a breakdown in the remote bike post software caused abnormality in the controller, which had affected related systems and caused the YouBike service in six cities and counties to be suspended. The breakdown has affected Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Taichung City and Chunghua County, Liu said, causing service suspension of about 22,000 YouBikes. After having notified all the city and county transportation departments of the situation soon after the problems were detected, the company dispatched technicians to all bike posts in the country to check and repair, Liu said, adding that all the problems are expected to be solved before night falls. The company estimated that systems in Taichung and Chunghua can be restored sooner. Liu said the system breakdown was estimated to affect 140,000 person-times nationally, with Taipei and New Taipei accounting for the most with around 100,000 to 110,000 person-times.
