More Taiwanese are nabbed in the Southeast Asian countries in alleged illegal activities. After a court in Indonesia sentenced four Taiwanese to death for drug trafficking, Cambodian police arrested 12 Taiwanese Tuesday on suspicion of cyber crimes.

According to media reports, Cambodian police arrested 64 people from mainland China and Taiwan on August 30, accusing them of taking part in an Internet scam. An official quoted in the story indicated that the 12 Taiwanese citizens could be deported to mainland China along with other Chinese suspects.

“The Initial information shows that at least 12 of the suspects are Taiwanese, while the rest are mainland Chinese; they are accused of defrauding victims in mainland China which started with bogus telephone calls made over the Internet,” according to Ouk Haiseila, chief of the Cambodian Interior Ministry’s Immigration Investigation Bureau.

“These suspects are currently detained by immigration police for questioning and will be deported to China later on,” Haiseila added.

In late June, Taiwan protested after Cambodia deported 25 Taiwanese Internet scam suspects to mainland China. Taiwanese authorities have been saying that such deportations reflect Beijing’s strong influence over Cambodia through aid and investment.

In April, Kenya and Malaysia sent 45 and 32 Taiwanese Internet scam suspects, respectively, to China despite protests by Taiwanese officials. In early August, five Taiwanese nationals were arrested in Kenya and deported to China on similar charges.
