Lionrock strengthens as another storm possibly forming

The 10th tropical storm of this year, Lionrock, has strengthened overnight and is expected to come closest to Taiwan on Friday and Saturday, bringing rain to northern Taiwan over the weekend, the Central Weather Bureau said Wednesday.

Typhoon Lionrock is forecast to intensify more than previously expected. It is currently located east of Ryukyu Islands and about 1200 kilometers away from Taiwan, the CWB said. It is expected to be at its closest to Taiwan on Friday and Saturday, with little chance of hitting the island directly.

While the 11th typhoon formed over the western Pacific this year has hit the northern island of Hokkaido in Japan and did not affect Taiwan, another tropical storm is forming near Guam, and possibly becoming the 12th typhoon of this year, according to the latest forecast.

The bureau noted that it will continue to observe the storm’s movement, as it may have interaction with Lionrock over the next several days.
