Formosa Group blamed for Vietnam's mass fish deaths

After months of investigation, the Hanoi government announced that one of the biggest environmental disasters hit Vietnam in April was caused by Formosa Plastics Group’s steel mill, which polluted the coastal waters by leaking toxic waste into the sea.

The disaster sparked a huge outcry across Vietnam for months after tons of dead fish and other marine lives washed up on central Vietnamese shores, Vietnamese vented their fury at both the government and Formosa, one of the communist country's biggest investors, accusing them of a cover-up.

Formosa operates a newly set up plant which is set to become the biggest of its kind in Southeast Asia, which is also one of the single biggest investments by a foreign firm in Vietnam.

The Group issued an apology Thursday and promised to compensate victims for causing a massive die-off of fish and affecting the livelihood of fishermen.

Some media reports said the investor will pay US$500 million to solve the problem, but no amount of funds was mentioned in Formosa Plastics Group’s statement.
