Tsai receives medal from Paraguayan President

President Tsai Ing-wen on Tuesday witnessed the signing of an aviation treaty between the Republic of China and Paraguay, Taiwan's only diplomatic ally in South America.

Tsai arrived in Paraguay Tuesday morning as the second and final stop of her first overseas trip since taking office on May 20.

Tsai was awarded a medal of highest honor by Paraguayan President Horacio Cartes during a meeting at the Government Palace, and the two leaders signed a joint communique reaffirming the warm relations, pledging more bilateral cooperation projects.

Tsai and Cartes also witnessed their foreign ministers signing the air transportation treaty, aimed at boosting aviation cooperation between the two sides.

Tsai was also scheduled to address Paraguay’s National Congress later that day, in which she met with the president of the Senate, Mario Abdo Benitez.

Tsai stated in the speech that she is honored to have received the medal from President Horacio Cartes, and she is hopeful that Taiwan and Paraguay could further deepen their ties and expand cooperation because the friendship between the two sides is based on shared values.

She added, Taiwan and Paraguay are complementary in their industry chains, thus it can be expected that the two sides increase investments in each other in various fields, with Paraguay being a stronghold for Taiwan’s market expansion in the Americas.

Tsai will depart Paraguay Friday for Los Angeles, where she will stay overnight before heading home to Taiwan July 1.
