Peng wins Golden Melody best Mandarin singer

Taiwanese singer Julia Peng captured the Best Mandarin Female Singer award for her album "Darling" at the 27th Golden Melody Awards in Taipei Saturday. It was the first time in her 20 years of singing career that Peng was nominated for the award. "I've waited for this for 20 years," the 44-year-old singer said in her acceptance speech. “I thought it was either A-mei or Tanya Chu, who would win the award.” The tearful singer thanked her good friends for encouraging her to keep singing while other people had lost faith in her. She also thanked her husband for letting her pursue a singing career, and in addressing to her three children, she said, “Mother has done only one thing well in the past 20 years, and that’s trying my best to sing well.” Peng, known for her powerful vocals, started her music career singing in pubs in the 1990s. She has since released over a dozen albums. Peng was competing against Taiwan's A-mei and Peggy Hsu, Singaporean singer-songwriter Tanya Chua, and Huang Qishan and Su Yunying of China. In related stories, Singaporean singer-songwriter JJ Lin picked up his second Best Mandarin Male Singer award with his album "From M.E. To Myself." Jacky Chen won Best Hokkien (Taiwanese) Male Singer for his album “Columbia,” while Huang Fei captured Best Hokkien Female Singer with "Wu Zi Tian Shu."
