TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The main China Airlines company union on Saturday demanded that the agreement reached with the striking Taoyuan Flight Attendants Union should also apply to all other personnel, including ground staff.
The union, which claims more than 10,000 members, had initially been critical of the decision by the 2,600 members of the Taoyuan union to call a strike on Friday, reports said.
The strike ended with CAL Chairman Ho Nuan-hsuan, who had only taken office earlier in the day, agreeing with most of the protesters’ demands.
The main company union said Saturday that management had neglected the interests and rights of the more than 8,000 other staff, so they should also enjoy the results of the new agreement, or the union would also take action and strike.
As dozens of flights were canceled Friday and Saturday, it was CAL ground staff which had to face sometimes angry passengers, who complained of having received no early warning about the strike action, reports said.
Management should not give the impression that only workers making lots of noise would obtain benefits, the company union said. It demanded that the seven agreements reached between CAL and the Taoyuan Flight Attendants Union Friday should also apply to other airline employees.
If the airline refused the demand, the company union might decide at next Monday’s meeting to launch street protests and a strike of its own, union officials said.
The agreement with the flight attendants’ union included a gradual rise in the subsidies for overseas work, and a return to the old system of reporting for work at Taipei Songshan Airport instead of Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.
