President Tsai Ing-wen embarked Friday on a nine-day trip to Panama and Paraguay, two of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies in Latin America, and arrived late Friday in Miami en route to Panama, where she will begin her first visit as Taiwan’s head of state since taking office on May 20.

Tsai was greeted by Joe Donovan, the chairman of the American Institute in Taiwan, after the presidential charter touched down at the airport.

Tsai then met with U.S. Senator Marco Rubio in the afternoon. The Senator reiterated U.S. friendship with Taiwan and its commitment to an ally.

The Senator later issued a statement on his official site, noting that he and Tsai had discussed ways to strengthen the U.S.-Taiwan security and economic relationship, and that he is hopeful that Tsai’s travel to Miami will provide big boost to the state and local economy.

“We must continue to advance our share goal of an Asia that is prosperous, peaceful and free. The United States will continue to work with President Tsai in the coming years to deepen the U.S.-Taiwan relationship,” he added.

During her 24-hour transit in Miami, Tsai will also visit the Port of Miami and meet with Wei-yin Chen, a Taiwanese pitcher with the Marlins. She is expected to return to Taiwan on July 2 after visiting Panama and Paraguay.
