Lin wins NIAG boxing, aiming at Olympics

Lin Yu-ting of the Chinese Culture University on Monday took gold medal in women’s boxing of the third weight category at the 2016 National Intercollegiate Athletic Games (NIAG), which includes boxing in the competition for the first time in the event’s history.

The NIAG takes place in Taitung in eastern Taiwan from April 30 to May 4.

In the women’s boxing final, Lin’s opponent, Chan Yu-hsuan of the National Taiwan Normal University, gave in at the very beginning of the match.

Chan told reporters, “I still wanted to fight, but there is a wide gap between [me] and my opponent, which made it too easy [for me] to get hurt.”

However, Lin said she didn’t expect her opponent to give in.

Armed with fast punching speed, Lin had dominated her opponents in the competition over the past few days. She said she had been training in a bid to boost her chances of qualifying for the Olympics, adding that participating in the NIAG would help her find the right tempo.

On the inclusion of boxing in the NIAG competition, Lin said, “It will provide a stage for college students who want to engage in boxing, which is a good sport.”

Lin has been trained to box for eight years since she first attended junior high school, and has won countless boxing competitions. She said she was thankful to her coaches for taking her to compete in many boxing events over the years.

She said she had always used “the moment of walking down from the podium is the moment everything starts all over again” as her motto to remind herself not to be prideful in victory and not to be frustrated in defeat.
