Taipei, July 13 (CNA) The New Taipei City Junior Chorus was named the winner of the Children's Choir category at the eighth World Choir Games, also known as "the Olympics for Choirs," that concluded Sunday in Riga City in Latvia.

The Taiwanese team, comprising 60 local students aged between 10 and 16, performed four songs at the international choir competition, including "Happy Feast" and "Song of Laughter" in Chinese, "The Wind of the Four Seasons" in Fukienese dialect and "Angyalok es pasztorok (The Angels and the Shepherds)" in Hungarian.

The Education Bureau of New Taipei City said the audience was fascinated with the team's amazing voice, perfect skills and excellent chemistry among the members.

Founded in 2000, the World Choir Games are an international choir festival held every two years on different continents. This year's competition took place from July 9-13 and attracted 460 choirs from 73 countries.

The idea to create the World Choir Games is based on the Olympic ideals, aiming to peacefully unify singing people and nations connected by song in a fair competition, according to the organizer.

The idea should inspire people to experience the strength of interaction, which is to challenge personality and community equally through the power of singing together, the organizer said.
