UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- The Russian and Ukrainian ambassadors clashed in the United Nations Security Council over the surge of violence in Ukraine's pro-Russian east and both urged the council to take action to end it.

Russia's Vitaly Churkin said Wednesday the council should call on Ukraine to end the "military chaos" and "acknowledge the need to take into account the interests of all citizens of the country."

Ukraine's Yuriy Sergeyev called on the council to demand that Russia withdraw its soldiers and paramilitary groups from the country. He said Moscow must also appeal to hundreds of Chechens, Cossacks and mercenaries to leave Ukraine.

Sergeyev said Ukraine wants a peaceful solution, but Russia must stop destabilizing the east and promoting separatism. Churkin said it's very difficult to talk about dialogue "when you're killing people."
