Taipei, March 17 (CNA) Two young Hong Kong women allegedly involved in a high-profile case of theft and vandalism were placed in detention Monday following their arrest the previous day. The teenagers are also under investigation for alleged forgery and were found to have overstayed their permits to visit Taiwan, according to Taipei district prosecutors. The 19-year-old Yao and 18-year-old Tsang will remain in a detention center for foreigners in Yilan pending investigation and trial, if they are indicted, the prosecutors said. The pair made headlines across Taiwan after they used false identities to rent a room in Taipei, which they allegedly trashed, then stole a television set. Taiwan police issued a warrant March 12 for the women's arrest and nabbed them Sunday at a low-cost hotel in the southern city of Tainan. Despite the pair's efforts to disguise themselves by dying their hair, they were identified by the hotel staff, who called the police. (By Liu Shih-yi and Y.F. Low)
