In politics, Michelle Bachelet was sworn in as Chile's president for a second time, while in El Salvador supporters of the losing presidential candidate demanded a recount of the vote. Argentine slum dwellers gathered to hear an interview with Pope Francis played on the first anniversary of his election, while pilgrims in Mexico made their annual trek up the Popocatepetl volcano to offer food, music, dance and fireworks in asking that they be spared a major eruption. Brazil's federal police paraded white elephants symbolizing public waste and threatened to go on strike at this summer's World Cup if their pay isn't increased. In Peru, a snack vendor tried to attract customers with a tongue-in-cheek costume and performance on the beach. Anti-government street protests continued in Venezuela, with demonstrators complaining about violent crime, high inflation and shortages of flour, cooking oil and other basic goods.
