Taipei, Feb. 17 (CNA) Edward Royce, chairman of the U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs, is scheduled to visit Taiwan later this week as part of a trip to East Asia, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) said Monday. Royce, a Republican from California, will lead a Congressional delegation on a three-day visit to Taiwan beginning Tuesday, according to the AIT, which represents U.S. interests in Taiwan in the absence of diplomatic ties. During the visit, the delegation will meet with senior leaders in Taiwan to discuss bilateral relations, trade and other issues, the AIT said. The bipartisan delegation is scheduled to meet with President Ma Ying-jeou and call on officials with the National Security Council and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to Taiwan's Foreign Ministry. This will be Royce's second visit to Taiwan since he took over as chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs in January 2013. He last visited Taiwan shortly after he became the chairman of the committee, and during that trip he voiced support for Taiwan's acquisition of U.S.-made F-16C/D fighter jets and submarines to meet its defense needs.
